There’s something special happening again along the Tay Estuary….. and if you have been here before, you’ll know exactly what that means.
The bottlenose dolphins are back.
Each year, as spring rolls into summer, these incredible creatures return to our waters, and their arrival marks the true beginning of the season. It’s one of the most magical wildlife spectacles in Scotland – and we’re lucky enough to have it right here on our doorstop.
Why the Tay Estuary Is So Special for Dolphins
The Tay Estuary is home to the most northerly populations of bottlenose dolphins in the world. These dolphins travel into the estuary to feed, play, and raise their young – and they come back year after year. Not bad, eh?
It’s not just a passing visit either. Throughout the summer months, sightings, become more frequent, giving visitors plenty of chances to catch a glimpse of those unmistakable dorsal fins gliding through the water.
Dolphin Sightings Are Already Starting
Over the past few days, there have already been sightings along the estuary, with dolphins spotted by SaltDogMarine on Facebook. Around the site, the wardens are already chatting to people. There’s been the usual “Did you see them?” with calls across pitches, binoculars being dusted off, and more than a few cups of tea going cold as folk keep watch over the water just in case they make another appearance. It’s one of those moments that brings everyone together – caravanners, campers, dog walkers, wardens – all united in the hope of spotting that dorsal fin.
Best Time to See Dolphins in the Tay Estuary
If you’re hoping to spot dolphins this summer, here are a few top tips:
High tides are the best with smooth water and gentle ripples. Keep an eye out for birds gathering – they often follow fish (and dolphins!). Be patient…..they tend to appear when you least expect it. We often sit on one of the benches (a few minutes walk away) we look towards Broughty Ferry Castle and when we see SaltDogMarine take guests out on the water we follow their direction. When they slow down or stop we know they are in that area.
Summer Starts Now
For us, the return of the dolphins is more than just wildlife sighting – it’s a sign that summer has officially begun.
Longer days, warmer evenings, and the chance of spotting dolphins….it doesn’t get much better than that. So if you’re planning a visit, bring your camera, grab a cuppa at the Larick Cafe, and settle in for a bit of dolphin watching in their natural habitat, that’s what makes this place so unique.
